Dean Michael Smith speaks at Freshman Convocation for the Class of 2017Harvard is a place of discovery for people leading positive change in the world.

Discovery is embedded in Harvard’s heritage, and it drives Harvard’s future. It is the energy and inspiration behind House Renewal and the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative—opening doors, creating opportunity, and bringing people from different walks of life together to learn from each other.

Harvard College helps students discover how they can best use their talents and gifts to lead lives of meaning and impact—and to solve complex global problems,” says Dean Khurana. Students who embrace Harvard’s invitation for intellectual, social, and personal transformation “will be well prepared to answer the call of a larger world that is in need of citizens and leaders who are not afraid to challenge the status quo or take risks.”

As he greeted freshmen this fall, Dean Smith emphasized that Harvard is a dynamic place—a constantly evolving place—because of its people, and he urged them to continue the momentum. “Ask a previously unconsidered question, shape a new idea, or create something before unimagined,” Smith said. “All these things became possible when you walked into the Yard.”
