Independently depart home city on an overnight flight to Osaka, Japan.

Upon your arrival at Kansai International Airport, enjoy a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Osaka, where early check-in has been arranged for your convenience. Take some time to rest and refresh after your journey before gathering for a welcome reception at the hotel. The evening is yours to explore Osaka and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Overnight: Patina Osaka

Osaka, Japan’s second largest city, is the traditional starting point of the Kumano Kodo. In the 10th century, pilgrims from Kyoto sailed down the Yodo River to begin their pilgrimage from Osaka. Tour the city’s key historical and cultural sites, beginning on the grounds of the 16th-century Osaka Castle, which played a major role in the unification of Japan during that period. Visit the historically significant Watanabe Tsu Kinenhi, the gateway to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, and imagine the journeys of travelers from centuries past. 

Experience the art of Sakai knife-making with an exclusive, hands-on workshop led by skilled master blacksmiths, followed by a tasty lunch featuring Osaka’s famous okonomiyaki. 

In the afternoon, enjoy a private tour of the Osaka Prefectural Chikatsu Asuka Museum to discover Japan’s fascinating ancient history and burial mounds through stunning exhibits designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando. Make a behind-the-scenes visit to a distinguished sake brewery, where a generational master brewer will guide you through traditional brewing methods and offer a curated tasting of local sakes. 

Cap off your memorable day with a festive welcome dinner.

Overnight: Patina Osaka

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, depart Osaka and embark on a picturesque journey through forested mountains to the sacred plateau of Mount Koya (Koyasan), a UNESCO World Heritage site (approx. 1.5 hours). Your day begins with a private tour of Kongobu-ji Danjo Garan Temple, the spiritual heart of Koyasan, where you can admire elegant rock gardens and beautifully painted sliding doors.

Following lunch, explore the Koyasan Reihokan Museum and view its exceptional collection of rare Buddhist artifacts and art. Continue to the serene and atmospheric Okunoin, Japan’s largest cemetery and the revered resting place of Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism. 

Later, check in to Eko-in Temple, where you’ll experience life as a modern pilgrim in tranquil, traditional accommodation. Enjoy some leisure time with the option to join a calming Ajikan meditation session led by a resident monk, before savoring a traditional Buddhist vegetarian dinner, Shojin Ryori. 

For those interested, the day concludes with an optional private evening tour of Oku-no-in, where you can discover the mystical ambiance of Koyasan along lantern-lit paths and moss-covered gravestones.

Overnight: Eko-in Temple

For those interested, your day may begin with a tranquil 7am morning temple service, joining monks in ancient sutra chanting, followed by the mesmerizing Goma Fire Ritual—a sacred purification ceremony. 

After a nourishing Buddhist temple breakfast, set out on a scenic drive from Koyasan to Tanabe (approx. 2 hours). Your first stop is the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Center, where you’ll gain fascinating insight into the storied traditions and history of this UNESCO-recognized pilgrimage route. Following lunch, you have the option to enjoy a gentle walk from the historic Sangenjaya Teahouse along peaceful forest paths to the renowned Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the most revered shrines in Japan. 

Later, check in to Kawayu-Onsen Fujiya, your riverside retreat, and relax in the therapeutic on-site open-air baths, fed by natural hot springs. The day concludes with a delicious dinner at your hotel, where you can reflect on your meaningful journey.

Begin your day with a peaceful breakfast at the temple, then set out on a private tour of Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the revered Kumano Sanzan shrines, celebrated for its beautiful Shinto architecture and spiritual significance at the meeting point of ancient rivers. 

For those who wish, enjoy an optional walk along the Nakahechi Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route, ascending through a majestic cedar forest to the mountain sanctuary of Kumano Nachi Taisha. Take in the breathtaking sight of Nachi Waterfall, Japan’s tallest uninterrupted cascade and an enduring symbol of natural and spiritual power. 

After lunch, travel through scenic countryside from the coastal mountains of Wakayama to Ise, a city rich in history and revered shrines (approx. 2 hours). Settle into Ancient Inn Ikyu, a traditional retreat nestled near the Ise Grand Shrine, offering a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern comfort. 

In the evening, savor a teppanyaki dinner, delighting in expertly prepared local cuisine.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before embarking on a private tour of the Kotai Jingu Shrine, Japan’s most sacred Shinto site renowned for its serene atmosphere and timeless spiritual tradition. Afterwards, explore the charming Okage Yokocho district, where meticulously preserved Edo period architecture offers a glimpse into the past. Take your time browsing craft shops and local eateries or simply relax and soak in the nostalgic surroundings. 

After lunch, journey to Kyoto and check in to The Thousand, your luxurious accommodation in the heart of the city. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at leisure—perhaps explore Kyoto’s vibrant streets, unwind at the hotel, or discover a unique spot for dinner. For those interested, an optional evening Shinrin-Yoku walk is available, offering a peaceful guided forest bathing meditation in nature to end your day on a calming note.

Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel before stepping into the serenity of Sanjūsangen-dō, where a private tour offers a close look at the remarkable 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Next, immerse yourself in the elegance of a traditional green tea ceremony, savoring the mindful rituals and gracious hospitality that define Japanese culture.

After lunch, enjoy a leisurely stroll along Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path—a picturesque canal-side trail lined with cherry trees, temples, and inviting shops. What to Expect

On these programs, you can expect to walk one to two (1-2) miles at a time while visiting different sites and participating in walking or architectural tours. Some excursions may involve climbing multiple flights of stairs without handrails, as well as walking on uneven pavement, unpaved roads, paths, or cobblestones. Please note that there may be instances where you'll need to stand for up to an hour at sites where seating is not available.
