Trip Overview

Travel through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania on a program that reveals how these three nations evolved from medieval trade hubs to innovative, digitally-connected societies. Explore Tallinn’s fortified Old Town, meet students in Tartu, and experience Riga’s Art Nouveau masterpieces, lively creative districts, and warm local hospitality. In Lithuania, examine centuries of faith and identity from Trakai’s island castle to the Hill of Crosses, and gain insight into modern independence at the KGB Museum. Throughout the journey, connect architecture, folklore, and contemporary culture to understand how the Baltic countries have shaped—and reshaped—their place in Europe.

After lunch at a local restaurant, drive into Gauja National Park for gentle walks amid forests, cliffs, and caves, and visit Turaida Castle, a red-brick medieval fortress overlooking the Gauja Valley. What to Expect

Activity Level 3

activity iconEstonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are now modern, cosmopolitan countries with well-developed tourism infrastructure. Much of what draws travelers to their capitals and major cities is the exceptional preservation of historic centers, and as in many of Europe's old towns, cobblestoned streets, uneven surfaces, steep staircases, and buildings without elevator access are simply part of the landscape. This program features long days walking and standing while touring, along with time in the touring vehicle. Travelers should be able to walk one to two miles a day at the group's pace, negotiate cobblestones and uneven surfaces that may be steep or wet, and manage situations without handrails or ramps. Only those fit to travel and prepared for these conditions should consider joining.

Flexibility is part of traveling well anywhere, and particularly so here. Some last-minute adjustments to the itinerary may be unavoidable, and while we do our best to communicate changes in advance, the nature of travel in this region does not always make that possible.
