Trip Overview

Join Harvard Alumni Travels on a voyage from Java and South China Seas then through the Straits of Malacca on a leisurely exploration of the richly varied nations of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Setting out from Bali, call in Surabaya and Semarang on Java's north coast and explore the culturally diverse legacy of Indonesia in the Dutch colonial heritage of the cities, the ruins of a 14th-century Majapahit City at Trowulan, and the stunning 9th-century Buddhist temple complex of Borobudur. Cosmopolitan Singapore offers a sense of its extraordinary multicultural past in its Muslim, Indian, and Chinese neighborhoods, as well as the story of its remarkable 20th-century transformation from a modest backwater port into one of the world's leading metropolises. In the old colonial ports of Malacca and Georgetown, encounter more of the ethnic and religious diversity born from the maritime trade in cloth and spices that is characteristic of this part of the world, and then end your journey with calls at a some of the more spectacularly beautiful resort islands that dot the northern end of the Malacca Strait.
