Trip Overview

Your journey begins in central Paris near the Opéra, where you’re introduced to France’s art de vivre with a growers‑champagne tasting in the private cellar at Les Dilettantes and a convivial opening dinner in the library above the famous Ruhlmann staircase. You then travel to Reims, your base for four nights overlooking the magnificent Gothic cathedral, for an in‑depth exploration of Champagne’s great houses and hidden gems. Highlights include a guided cathedral visit and two‑Michelin‑starred lunch at Les Crayères; insider cellar tours and tastings at Veuve Clicquot, Alfred Gratien, Bollinger, Pommery, and Taittinger; and a barrel‑aging masterclass in Epernay. You’ll also discover the scenic, lesser‑known Aube region, meeting biodynamic grower Olivier Horiot, enjoying a farm‑to‑table lunch at Green‑starred Le Garde Champêtre, and wandering the medieval streets of Troyes. Throughout, gourmet meals, curated champagne pairings, and time at leisure in Reims combine to offer a rich, nuanced portrait of the Champagne region’s history, culture, and wines.

Independent departures on an overnight flight to Paris, France

Upon arrival, transfer to the Hotel Edouard 7 near the Opera in Paris. The hotel is a former private mansion and is now a well appointed 4 star hotel a short walk from the Opera.

We begin with an introduction to champagne through a tasting of growers champagnes, the more terroir based small production wines that contrast with the house blend style of the the bigger houses. This is hosted by Dilettantes, the best known grower champagne Parisian merchant and it’s an excellent way to set the scene for our journey to wine country.

We then enjoy a cocktail style dinner in the library above the famous Ruhlmann staircase to get the tour off to a convivial start.

Overnight:  Hotel Edouard 7

After breakfast, we leave Paris to make our way to Reims, home to a magnificent Gothic cathedral and perhaps the ultimate destination for champagne lovers. We start with a guided visit to the cathedral before we enjoy a magnificent welcome lunch at the 2 Michelin star Les Crayeres restaurant. This is one of the great restaurants of Champagne and the perfect place to welcome us to the region.

After lunch we enjoy a private visit to one of the best known houses of all at Veuve Clicquot, giving us a first look at the renowned chalk cellars and a good glimpse into the DNA of one of the historic houses, concluding with a tasting of 4 Champagnes. After we leave Veuve, a 10 minute drive takes to La Caserne Chanzy, a 5 star hotel overlooking Reims cathedral and our base for the next 4 nights. The evening is free.

Overnight:  La Caserne Chanzy

Today we switch our attention to Epernay, the other historic pillar of the region. We start with a morning visit to Alfred Gratien, the Wine Society’s Champagne of choice and a traditional producer of great renown since 1864. Our hosts take us into the barrel cellar for a barrel making and aging masterclass to understand how a few premium producers create very distinctive champagnes through barrel aging.

We conclude with a vertical tasting of some of Gratien’s older vintages, followed by an elegant lunch at the property.

In the afternoon we switch attention to Bollinger, James Bond’s favourite champagne house, renowned for pinot noir dominated muscular champagnes with a touch of oak. We take a walk around their beautiful facilities and some of the oldest vineyards before concluding with a tasting.

After a short drive back to Reims, we have some time to freshen up before an informal dinner at Le Condorcet, a renowned local bistro for a dinner accompanied by Champagne and some other wines too.

Overnight:  La Caserne Chanzy

Meals: B, L, D

Today we turn our attention to the Aube region in the south of Champagne. This is the scenic hidden side of Champagne, populated by a cluster of organic and biodynamic growers in the area around Gye sur Seine. We visit one of the biodynamic growers in Les Riceys, Olivier Horiot, for a short visit and tasting before lunch at the delightful Green Michelin starred Le Garde Champetre for a local lunch accompanied by a selection of local Aube Champagnes, very much in farm to table style with a focus on local seasonal produce. After lunch we drive to the charming medieval city of Troyes for a guided walk around its cobbled streets before our return to Reims for a free evening.

Overnight:  La Caserne Chanzy

Meals: B, L

After breakfast (and a lecture), we enjoy a tour of Pommery’s delightful Art Deco Villa Demoiselle concluding with a short tasting. We return to the hotel where lunch and the early afternoon is free. In the late afternoon we conclude the tour at Taittinger’s HQ, starting with a visit to the cellars before a tasting. Taittinger was James Bond’s s original favourite champagne and is one of the last great independent champagne houses. After a very short bus ride, we have dinner in their private Pavillon Francois Taittinger, next to the vineyards.

After breakfast we return to Paris, stopping at Paris Charles de Gaulle for those flying home today.
