Welcome to Your City: Denver

Mike Shum (b. Denver, CO. 1985) is an independent filmmaker who specializes in documentary cinematography and journalism. Born to immigrant parents from Hong Kong, Shum was raised with an interest in bridging multiple and at times divergent perspectives. This interest informed his body of work which spans broadcast television, investigative journalism, and feature documentaries. ​ Shum’s collaborations with PBS Frontline and Al Jazeera Witness have examined a broad range of critical issues, including conflict, climate change, and political polarization. His work has been recognized with nominations and awards from the National News & Documentary Emmys, the NAACP Image Awards, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Tribeca Film Festival’s Audience Award, and a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. ​ In 2025, Shum completed the Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard University, where he explored the future of journalism and examined how storytelling can forge public trust and accountability through documentary film.

I graduated from Harvard T.H. Chan in May 2025, where I received my M.S. in Environmental Health with a specific focus in environmental health exposures. During this program, I received extensive training in epidemiology, statistics, toxicology, and even water and atmospheric science. I completed my thesis in a toxicology laboratory, where I refined my passion for and interest in wet lab work. In addition to my M.S. I also have my MPH in Health Policy and Management. I am looking forward to connecting with other recent alumni!

New to Colorado

I recently graduated from HGSE with my doctorate in education leadership and I am looking forward to connecting with other Harvard alums in the area. My professional background is in education nonprofit leadership and philanthropy, and I have a particular interest in college and career success, youth development, and collective impact. My wife and I are both from CO and we have a 19 month old. We are excited to be back in the state.

Tyler Fisher is a Research Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center. Tyler's research is on "Neglected Ideas in Democracy Reform." Tyler is also Principal of Trailmark Strategies, a Senior Advisor with Dalberg, and writes "Bipolar and Bipartisan" on Substack.

My career is rooted in both the design and implementation of enterprise security infrastructure and the service delivery roles that extend beyond the technical aspects of the field. My journey has been characterized by a strategic approach to developing cybersecurity solutions, ensuring confidential data is safeguarded. My technical skills are further complemented by my leadership experience. Previously, I built and led teams of sales engineers, technical support engineers and sustainment engineers, at a prominent Cybersecurity firm. This role allowed me to directly contribute to the company's success by effectively managing people and enabling high-performing teams. I am driven by a passion for technology, a commitment to excellence, and a belief in the transformative power of consistency, teamwork, and partnerships to foster a culture high-performance and innovation
