Join the alumni YouTube livestream to hear from Professor of Anthropology and of Global Health and Social Medicine, Joseph P. Gone, as he discusses rethinking American Indian mental health services. In the early part of his career, Professor Gone studied depression and problem drinking at the Fort Belknap Indian reservation in Montana. He interviewed Traveling Thunder, a cultural traditionalist, who attributed struggles with substance abuse to the impact of Euro-American colonization and the community's struggles with adapting to a different way of life. This perspective reframes mental disorders as postcolonial issues, forming an alternative Indigenous mental health framework distinct from mainstream psychiatry.

This program is coordinated through the Office of the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning and will be livestreamed to the alumni community in collaboration with the Harvard Alumni Association.
