Birding at Mt. Auburn Cemetery
Mount Auburn Cemetery (on Mt. Auburn Street at the Cambridge-Watertown line, via the No. 71 or 73 buses from Harvard Square)
Join Classmate Tom Warren for an early morning walk in Mt. Auburn Cemetery — Cambridge's most beautiful and historic — and also a noted habitat, or migratory stopping point, for many bird species. Although the Cemetery ordinarily opens to visitors at 8AM, we are told that, during this period of highest bird migration, the gates are opening an hour early, so let us resolve to arrive by 6:59AM and assemble just inside the Main Gate. Because the formal Welcome to the Reunion takes place in Emerson 105 at 9AM, we will plan to depart the Cemetery by 8:45AM. Wear comfortable attire and footware, and plan on walking for one to two miles (although shorter itineraries are possible). Five years ago we were unsuccessful in locating the grave of our Classmate Jeffrey Forbes; this year we hope to remedy that failure.
Transportation Options: (in all cases, about five minutes from Harvard Square)
- Via taxi or Uber
- Via MBTA Bus No. 71 or 73 from Harvard Station
- Via private vehicle (We believe---but cannot guarantee---that the Cemetery's vehicle gates will be open, allowing parking inside; try to rideshare as much as possible). Bill Barrett (508-838-7419, voice only, no texting; keep trying if no answer) has room for four. Other classmates may also have room (with Barrett as coordinator).

Concurrent Class Program: Finding Common Ground and Defending Democracy
Emerson 105
With a highly polarized political divide among citizens, and alarming signs of a Gathering Storm assault on the heretofore seemingly self-enforcing core principles, norms, and values of constitutional democracy and the rule of law, the 2024 election looms as a key test of the strength or fragility of the Center — the institutions and constraints that supposedly keep us free, and that “keep things from falling apart”!
A panel and audience discussion of the likely outcome and what, if any, role we can or could play, individually and collectively.
Moderator and Panelist: Scott Harshbarger, co-founder and board chair of Lawyers Defending American Democracy, former MA AG, and former President of Common Cause
Panelists:
