Alumni in Public Service

To me, public service is the call to dedicate one’s time to ensuring that everyone in this country, particularly young people from communities impacted by poverty, have the best shot at thriving. —Kwame Owusu-Kesse

Chief Executive Officer, Harlem Children’s Zone

Harlem, New York

1. How do you contribute to public service in your community?

As CEO of Harlem Children’s Zone, I contribute to public service in Harlem, and communities like ours all over the country, by modeling what is possible for the millions of young people across this country that are impacted by poverty. To do this, I lead an organization of public servants—so much so that Servant Leadership is one of our core beliefs and values—who consider ourselves first responders for the communities we serve. We are on the front lines of poverty alleviation and we do not take this role lightly. It is an honor and privilege to serve our communities.

2. How has your Harvard alumni network supported your efforts in community impact and public service?

I have been fortunate to have made amazing connections during my time at Harvard and enduring connections—both personally and professionally—due to my affiliation with Harvard. Whether they are supporting with their time, resources or connections, Harvard alumni have continually shown up to support me in this work; some even joining me at HCZ!

3. What does public service mean to you?

To me, public service is the call to dedicate one’s time to ensuring that everyone in this country, particularly young people from communities impacted by poverty, have the best shot at thriving—mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and economically.
