Trip Overview

Few experiences can match this exclusive, in-depth itinerary exploring the many facets of southern Africa, where nature’s spectacle is at its most dramatic, history is rich, cultures are diverse and “Big Five” game viewing in their natural habitats is extraordinary. Follow Nelson Mandela’s “Long Walk to Freedom” in South Africa, “the rainbow nation.” A highlight of your journey is the three-night river safari aboard the exclusively chartered, 28-passenger, Five-Star Zambezi Queen on Namibia’s legendary Chobe River. Enjoy naturalist-guided excursions by small watercraft, a unique alternative to traditional land safaris. Your itinerary also includes the classic land safari, with superb game viewing on four-wheel-drive safari vehicles in the renowned MalaMala Private Game Reserve, an extension of South Africa’s renowned Kruger National Park, and in Botswana, a haven for nearly all of the southern African mammal species. Visit three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders, Zimbabwe’s spectacular Victoria Falls. Enjoy Five-Star accommodations in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Victoria Falls and MalaMala.

What to Expect

Activity Level 4

Generally, the river safaris and game drives are not physically demanding, and participation in these activities is optional and at your discretion. Excursions may involve some walking over stone floors, brick streets, or uneven terrain, and may require climbing stairs. You must be able to step into and out of safari vehicles and excursion boats alone or with minimal assistance from your travel companion. The itinerary involves long, bumpy drives over very rough, dusty terrain. This program also includes several flights, and you must be able to go up and down stairs to board and deplane the airplanes. South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe are located in a malaria zone. It is strongly recommended that you discuss this risk with your personal physician immediately to determine your need for an anti-malaria regimen no later than four months prior to departure.
