Charles Maier
Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History
Charles Maier is the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History at Harvard, where he teaches the history of the two world wars, among other courses. He has been a frequent visitor to the battle sites, museums, and war memorials in France. Professor Maier received his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard and has taught previously at Duke University and various European universities. He has received decorations from the governments of Germany and Austria and holds an honorary degree from the University of Padua. He is co-director of the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History and a past director of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies. Among his recent books are Once within Borders: Territories of Power, Wealth, and Belonging since 1500; Leviathan 2.0: Inventing Modern Statehood; and Among Empires: American Ascendancy and its Predecessors.
