Puebla and Oaxaca
Join Harvard alumni for a journey into the rich cultural legacy of Puebla and Oaxaca, both thriving cities with remarkable ancient and colonial heritages. The visual traditions currently burgeoning in Puebla and Oaxaca have ancient roots stretching deep into the history of México. Creative genius flourished early among the pre-Columbian societies that settled near these cities. Around Puebla, the Cholultecas, built the fantastic honeycombed Pyramid of Tepanapa. Near present-day Oaxaca, the Zapotecs chiseled "Dancers" and "Swimmers" into the stone temples of Monte Albán, while the Mixtecs covered the palace walls of Mitla with magnificent stone mosaics. Puebla and Oaxaca are two of Mexico’s best preserved colonial cities, as evidenced by the abundance of colonial architecture including beautiful churches and monasteries. The guide throughout is a Oaxacan native, who is one of Mexico’s most revered guides. An expert in colonial art, archaeology, and colonial history, he is extremely knowledgeable in the ways of the indigenous cultures, their festivals, rituals as well as their history.
