Early College Awareness event in New York City
The First Generation Harvard Alumni Shared Interest Group had its kickoff Early College Awareness session on November 8, 2014 at the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning. Andrew Herwitz AB '83, JD '90, Nelida Garcia AB '14, and Scott Farber AB '01 were the session panelists. Nelida eloquently shared her experience of coming to Harvard as a first generation students and described the different kinds of support she received along the way. Scott shared his story of coming to Harvard with full financial aid, and spoke extensively from his position as an educator about the importance of developing study skills for college.
The event was attended by about 60 parents and children, and went well beyond the two hours the group had planned for, thanks to a long Q&A session. The older students in particular had many concrete questions about making academic and social transitions to college. There was clearly a demand for future sessions, so the group is already planning future events with the school on a variety of topics, while also inviting other first generation Harvard alumni in the NYC area to participate in them.
