Configuration with Email Clients

Changing Your Outbound Email Settings

Post.Harvard email addresses are a forwarding service and not stand-alone email accounts.  As such, they only forward incoming mail (mail sent to a Post.Harvard address), and do not provide a way to send outgoing mail.

However, it is often possible to display your Post.Harvard address as a "from" address or a "reply-to" address when sending mail from your existing email address.  Please note that some email programs and email providers (such as AOL) do not provide a way to change your "from" or "reply-to" address.

Changing Your Outbound Email Settings

The easiest way to let everyone know about your permanent email address is to change your outbound message so they are addressed from your Post.Harvard address.  When changing your mail settings, always make sure to keep your server settings (POP and SMTP) corresponding to your current email account (the account that your Post.Harvard email address is forwarding to).  Post.Harvard does not have POP or SMTP servers.
Below are instructions for configuring some common email programs to display Post.Harvard addresses on outgoing mail.  Please note that the exact procedures may vary slightly depending what version you are using – please consult your mail program's help section for more information.

Desktop Email Clients

Eudora

  • Select "Options" from the Tools Menu (for earlier versions of Eudora, select "Settings" from the Special menu)
  • Click on "Getting Started" (in older versions, the link may be "Personal Information")
  • Enter your Post.Harvard address in the "Return Address" field, and click "OK"

Do not change any of your server settings; these should still correspond to your current email address (i.e. the address that your Post.Harvard email address is forwarding to).

Microsoft Outlook Express

  • Select "Accounts" from the Tools menu.
  • Select your default mail account and press the Properties button.
  • Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
    • Name: Your real name
    • E-mail address: Your Post.Harvard address (see note)
    • Reply address: Your Post.Harvard address

Note: Some ISPs do not allow you to send mail with any From address that is not in their domain. In that case, you will have to put your real email address in the E-mail address field, but you can leave your Post.Harvard address in the Reply address field, and replies will go to your Post.Harvard e-mail address.
Now Click the OK button, and then the Close button.
You are now ready to begin using your permanent email address!

Mozilla Thunderbird

  • Select "Account Settings" from the Tools menu.
  • Enter your Post.Harvard address in the "email address" field, and click "OK"

Note: Some ISPs do not allow you to send mail with any From address that is not in their domain. In that case, you will have to put your real email address in the email address field, but you can leave your permanent address in the Reply address field, and replies will go to your permanent email address.

Pegasus Mail (version 2.3 or later)

  • From the File menu, Select "Preferences" and then select "General Settings."
  • Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
    • Personal Name: Your real name
    • Default reply address: Your Post.Harvard address
  • Click the OK button. You are now ready to begin using your Post.Harvard email address!

Other Email Programs

Most popular email programs have a setup area so you can easily display your Post.Harvard address on outgoing messages. This area may be listed as "options," "settings," or "preferences," depending on what program you are using.
In this area, look for a field called "return address," "reply-to address," or "alias," and enter your Post.Harvard address.
Please see your email program's help section if you need more specific instructions.
