Cambridge, MAThe Harvard Alumni Association is pleased to offer alumni, students, faculty,
staff, and guests a rare opportunity to attend an exclusive private screening
and panel discussion of the much-anticipated film adaption of the beloved
children's classic Where the Wild Things Are. Step into the imaginary
adventures of Max, the King of All Wild Things, and explore the power of
imagination and its translation to the wide screen. Distinguished professor
Maria Tatar, Wicked author Gregory Maguire, and award-winning writer
John Cech lead a lively literary discussion on this modern-day adaptation of the
1963, Caldecott Medal–winning picture book.
This screening and discussion
launches Professor Tatar's new online course, "Through the Looking Glass: The
History, Philosophy, and Literature of Childhood," a dynamic version of her
popular undergraduate course, Childhood: Its History, Philosophy, and
Literature. This program of study explores the revelatory power of childhood
reading and classic children's tales through the works of such authors as
Maurice Sendak, E. B. White, and Lois Lowry. Engage in a dynamic student
discussion with alumni worldwide. Rediscover the Harvard classroom experience
from home by taking a trip down the rabbit hole, into the wardrobe, and through
the looking glass.
Maria Tatar
Maria Tatar is the John L. Loeb
Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, where she
chairs the Program in Folklore and Mythology and teaches courses in German
studies, folklore, and children’s literature. She has written and edited
numerous books, including Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in
Childhood, The Annotated Brothers Grimm, The Annotated Classic
Fairy Tales, and Secrets Beyond the Door: “Bluebeard” in Folklore,
Fiction, and Film.
Gregory Maguire
Gregory Maguire is the author of
such best sellers as Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister,
Lost, Mirror Mirror, and Son of a Witch, the sequel
to Wicked. His latest book, Making Mischief: A Maurice Sendak
Appreciation, is a stunning visual tribute and exploration of the recurring
motifs in the life work of legendary author Maurice Sendak. Maguire received his
PhD in English and American Literature from Tufts University. His work as a
consultant in creative writing for children has taken him to speaking
engagements across the United States and abroad. He is a founder and codirector
of Children's Literature New England, Inc., a nonprofit educational charity
established in 1987.
John
Cech
John Cech is the author of fiction, prose, poetry, and
criticism for adults and children, including Angels and Wild Things, a
study of the work of Maurice Sendak. Cech is Professor of English and Children's
Literature at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he also directs
the Center for Children's Literature and Culture. Cech has been a commentator on
children's culture for NPR's "All Things Considered," and he was the creator,
producer, and host of "Recess!"—the public radio program about the cultures of
childhood, which aired nationally from 1998–2006.
